Maths Curriculum at Brackenwood Junior School

The purpose of mathematics at Brackenwood Junior School is to equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding to become confident mathematical problem solvers. Children are taught to think and reason mathematically, applying skills fluently and efficiently, arriving at the accurate answer and discussing their methodology.

Our lessons are planned in a way that encourages smaller steps to aid the making of connections and chains of reasoning. Children are encouraged to discuss their thinking and prove their answers by using mathematical representations and manipulatives. Mathematics education at Brackenwood Junior School provides children with an understanding of the world around them through contextual problem solving and a curiosity and enjoyment of the subject.

At Brackenwood Junior School, we are passionate about ensuring that all children receive a sequenced, knowledge rich mathematical education. Here at Brackenwood, we deliver well-constructed and sequenced lessons, which build on the previous concepts and allow children to develop their mathematical thinking and vocabulary.

The use of talking time to explain thinking is crucial to consolidating the concepts we cover. Children will become masters of maths by using critical thinking to answer challenging reasoning questions. Fluency is important to us here at Brackenwood. Daily practice of these skills aids our pupils when attempting challenging reasoning activities.

At Brackenwood Juniors, our curriculum is designed to ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach the expected standard (and beyond) at the end of Year 6. We use the Power Maths scheme and supplement it with support materials and NCETM challenge activities to ensure our curriculum is challenging but accessible for all. Daily practice of arithmetic and planned lesson starters ensure fluency is addressed. Times tables is taught once a week along with a weekly homework on TT Rock Stars. Knowledge retrieval is key to long term understanding. Therefore, maths lessons start with a ‘power up’, which reinforces previous lessons. During our mathematics lessons, all children are taught how to use various representations to show their thinking. Talking and explaining, using technical mathematical language, is key to success. This can be seen through the use of sentence stems and working walls.
