PSHE Curriculum

Intent

At Brackenwood Junior School, we are committed to fostering the holistic development of our pupils through a comprehensive and engaging Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme using Kapow. Our intent is to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to thrive in the wider world, promoting their emotional wellbeing, resilience, and sense of belonging. We aim to educate pupils on:

  • Understanding Relationships: Recognising the importance of positive relationships, empathy, and respect for others.

  • Health Education: Developing a clear understanding of physical health, mental wellbeing, and emotional resilience.

  • Economic Awareness: Encouraging financial literacy and an understanding of the role of money in everyday life.

  • Personal Safety: Teaching children how to keep themselves safe in both the physical and digital realms.

We strive to ensure that our PSHE curriculum reflects the diverse needs of our pupils, promoting equality and challenging stereotypes, thereby fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect.

Implementation:

At Brackenwood Junior School, PSHE is delivered through a carefully sequenced curriculum using the Kapow Primary scheme of work. This structured approach ensures that learning is progressive, age-appropriate and aligned with statutory guidance, including the Relationships and Health Education requirements.

Our implementation strategy includes the following key elements:

  • Weekly PSHE Lessons: Every class receives dedicated PSHE lessons each week, following Kapow’s spiral curriculum, which revisits key themes such as relationships, health, wellbeing and economic understanding with increasing depth over time.

  • Cross-Curricular Links: PSHE learning is reinforced through other subject areas including computing and PE, as well as through themed days and school-wide initiatives.

  • Whole School Assemblies: Regular assemblies support the PSHE curriculum by exploring topics such as British Values, diversity, resilience, and kindness, creating a consistent message throughout the school.

  • Inclusive Teaching Practices: Lessons are differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all learners. Staff ensure that the curriculum is accessible and representative, celebrating a wide range of backgrounds, beliefs and family structures.

  • Safe and Supportive Environment: Staff create safe spaces for open discussion, encouraging pupils to express their thoughts and opinions respectfully and without judgment.

  • Pupil Voice: Children are given regular opportunities to contribute their ideas and feedback about PSHE through class discussions and wellbeing surveys.

  • Responsive Teaching: Staff use ongoing assessment and current events to adapt lessons as needed, ensuring PSHE is relevant and reflective of the pupils’ lives and experiences

  • Staff Development: Teachers receive regular training and guidance on delivering PSHE with confidence and sensitivity, particularly when addressing more complex or sensitive topics

Our PSHE curriculum is regularly reviewed by subject leaders and senior staff to ensure high-quality delivery and continued relevance. This collaborative and reflective approach allows us to respond to the changing needs of our school community and the wider world.

PSHE Long Term Plan

Impact:

The impact of our PSHE programme is evidenced in the positive attitudes and behaviours demonstrated by our pupils, as well as the broader school community. At Brackenwood Junior School, children will:

  • Recognise and apply the British Values

  • Be able to recognise, understand and manage their own emotions

  • Understand who they can rely on and ask for support.

  • Look after their own mental health and ask for support where necessary.

  • Be on their way to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

  • Recognise differences and have an understanding of diversity.

  • Apply learnt skills in real life situations

  • Demonstrate self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • Have developed and maintained healthy relationships with peers and adults.

  • Understand the physical aspects involved in the teaching of RSE at the level appropriate to them as an individual.

  • Show respect to themselves and others.

In summary, our PSHE programme is an integral part of Brackenwood Junior’s ethos, driving our mission to develop well-rounded, responsible citizens who can flourish in an ever-changing world. Our commitment to continuous refinement and improvement ensures that our PSHE education remains relevant, impactful, and inspiring for all our pupils.
