PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools
The Government provide additional funding to schools to help them improve physical education (PE) and sport. The funding equates to £16,000 plus £10 per pupil.
Schools can choose how they use the funding, for example to:
-
hire specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers during PE lessons;
-
support and involve the least active children by running after-school sports clubs and holiday clubs, e.g. the Change4Life clubs;
-
provide resources and training courses in PE and sport for teachers;
-
run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games;
-
run sports activities with other schools.
Accountability
Since September 2013, Ofsted inspections report on PE and sport provision and on how schools spend their additional funding. Schools are required to publish on their websites details of how they spend (or will spend) their PE and sport grant. They must also include detail about the impact this funding has on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment.
Details of our provision and funding for the current year can be found below - See documents at the bottom of the page.
As part of the National Curriculum 2014, all schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
-
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
-
use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
-
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Currently at Brackenwood Junior School, our Key Stage Two children participate in a block course of swimming at Calday Swimming Baths in the Autumn Term. Each child attends a small group session for 30 minutes for 5 days.
Children who need further swimming support in Upper Key Stage Two have extra sessions to support their development towards National Curriculum objectives.
Since 2017, schools have been required to publish how many Year 6 pupils have met the National Curriculum requirements relating to swimming and water safety.
Overall Year 6 (2025-26) Swimming performance:
-
72% achieved 25m
-
69% achieved Range of Strokes
-
72% achieved Self Rescue
